This document reports on an analysis conducted to find out how white-collar workers have been affected by the latest developments in computerization and how current changes influence work organization, personnel training, and skills. The document consists of an introduction, seven chapters, and an 18-page bibliography. The first chapter examines the impact of technology by comparing it with other factors of change. Chapter 2 considers key changes within the finance, retailing, and telecommunications service industries. The third chapter looks at the impact on work organization as it affects processing clerks and related office employees; engineers and draftspeople; typists and secretaries; and inventory control personnel. The fourth chapter discusses changes to skills and job content and reports changes in overall skill levels; in employment and occupational structure; in the content of individual worker's activity; and in the knowledge, know-how, abilities, and behavior required of the worker. Chapter 5 reports on the consequences for the workforce as to salary scales and job status; hiring standards; workplace locale; career ladders; layoffs, readaptation, and reassignment of workers; and the specific groups of people who seem to be most vulnerable to changes. Chapter 6 examines the three groups of factors (economic, social and institutional, and time) that explain the current changes. Chapter 7 lists general conclusions. (CML)
