Connellys' Classroom Cutaway
Connelly, John; Connelly, Marilyn
TechTrends: Linking Research and Practice to Improve Learning, v52 n6 p14-15 Nov 2008
This article aims to help classroom teachers use the educational tool of student-produced media to meet their curriculum objectives. It has been the authors' experience in three decades of utilizing this tool personally and observing other teachers utilizing this tool, across nearly all grades and course content areas, that it is very effective. In 1988 the authors were teaching in Honolulu, Hawaii when they discovered an enrichment next-step for students who had produced a film or video or computer program, or other media product. That was the year they began entering--and winning--at the AECT-sponsored International Student Media Festival (ISMF). ISMF was and is a wonderful showcase for student-produced media. It is an opportunity for educators to share the work of their students with other educators and students from around the country. Another benefit of ISMF available to schools and teachers whose student projects win at ISMF comes from bringing students to the annual festival. A well-planned trip can be a treasure trove of learning possibilities, yielding forever memories of an educational, enriching, and fun nature. In this article, the authors share a few of such memories. (Contains 2 figures.)
