The mechanics of sound systems, editing, and titles, animations, and special effects are explained. A major part of the book concerns the making of a student film, "Sparrow." The filmmakers' diary of this film, from conception through production, is presented. Then three film teachers criticize the film, shot by shot, to point up the flaws in it.
