Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol and Other Drug Effects. A Guide for Teachers.
New Jersey State Dept. of Education, Trenton. Div. of General Academic Education.
This curriculum guide on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is intended to help meet New Jersey secondary-level learning objectives in the area of chemical health education. The guide is organized into six sections, each with a conceptual statement, content outline, specific objectives, and lesson plans. The six sections and corresponding major concepts are as follows: (1) "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: What is It?" (FAS is a combination of characteristics in infants and children resulting from maternal drinking during pregnancy); (2) "History of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Pioneers of the 1970s, '80s, and Beyond" (FAS was formally identified as a syndrome in the U.S. in 1973); (3) "FAS is Only the Tip of the Iceberg: Alcohol-Related Birth Defects (ARBD)" (ARBD are less severe conditions caused by maternal drinking during pregnancy); (4) "Alcohol is Not the Only Problem: The Effects of Licit and Illicit Drugs on Pregnancy" (adverse effects of maternal consumption of any drug substance, including alcohol, tobacco, or medications); (5) "So You're Thinking about Getting Pregnant: Don't Drink or Take Drugs" (increasing evidence suggests drug and alcohol use by either parent prior to conception may have adverse effects); (6) "Prevention of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol and Other Drug Effects is the Goal: Education is the Answer." Also included are the text of the Surgeon General's Advisory on Alcohol and Pregnancy and a list of 12 resources. (DB)
