Parent's Journal is a set of 16 videotapes for parents of prenatal, infant, and toddler-age children, created by the Alaska Native Home Base Video Project of the Tlingit and Haida Head Start Program. This series offers culturally relevant solutions to the challenges of parenting, drawing on the life stories and experiences of capable mothers and fathers, practical advice from parents and professionals, the wisdom of elders, and the traditional values of the Tlingit and Haida Indians of southeast Alaska. The videos are designed to be used in facilitated group settings or during home visits by an early childhood specialist. A workbook of activities extends the ideas and issues brought up in each video. The 16 videotapes are: A Friendship with Head Start; Baby's First Year: Growth and Development; Breastfeeding Is Best; Childbirth and Newborn Care; Childcare for Babies and Toddlers; Creativity: Every Child's Gift; Every Child Is Special; It All Begins with the Brain; It Takes Two: The Importance of Father Involvement in Toddler Care; Language, Literacy and Culture; Pregnancy and Childbirth; Preventing and Prevailing: The Challenges of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome; Seeds of Respect: Guidance and Discipline; Teenage Parenting; Toddler Care; and Toddler Development. Running times range from 11 to 16 minutes each. The videos are close-captioned for the hearing impaired. (SV)
