Write on Target: Preparing Young Writers To Succeed on State Writing Achievement Tests.
Thomason, Tommy; York, Carol
This handbook guides teachers through nine workshops designed to share strategies for success on writing tests. The workshops in the handbook give practical ideas that can be implemented in the elementary classroom to set the stage for test success without compromising children's growth as writers. Following a foreword by Michael R. Sampson and "Fermentation" by Brod Bagert, the nine writing workshops are entitled: (1) "Putting the Puzzle Together: Building a Writer-Friendly Classroom"; (2) "Building Fluency: Creating Confident Test-Takers"; (3) "What Is Good Writing Anyway? Using Children's Literature to Teach Writing"; (4) "Using Rubrics to Teach Writing"; (5) "Teaching Narrative and Expository Writing"; (6) "More Than Just Elaboration: Creating Experiences for Readers"; (7) "A Potpourri of Writing Strategies: Adding Variety to Your Writing Workshop"; (8) "Getting Ready for the Test: Preparing Parents, Students, and School"; and (9) "Frequently Asked Questions: Issues and Answers on Writing and Testing." An appendix by Scott Beasley is entitled "States Use Various Approaches to Assess Writing." (NKA)
