Being a college president has been Kenya Ayers' goal since she started in higher education in the late 1990s. "I'm really clear," she says. "I want to do this." Ayers is well on her way. She's been a provost, an academic dean and an administrative one, and an associate vice president of academic affairs at colleges in Washington, DC, Michigan, and now Illinois, where she's the dean for academic enrichment and engagement at Harper College. Currently, she's on leave from that position so she can shadow Renu Khator, the president and chancellor of the University of Houston System, as part of the American Council on Education (ACE) fellowship. While she may not have needed the tap, she, like every other aspiring college president, needs as many helping hands as she can get. One prestigious fellowship isn't enough to clear the path to a college presidency. Neither is one mentor. Rather than a stark line from one mentor to a college presidency, a mentorship is a constellation connecting a leader to mentors and to their own mentees, as well as to sponsors who campaign for their success. This is the other success agenda: to bring the best leaders to college presidencies as a matter of formal and informal mentorship systems that work together to grow the best in leaders and put them in the position to achieve their goals.
