Research conducted on El Salvador's educational reform program during the 1970 school year is summarized. The primary focus is on the effect of instructional television on that reform. The administrative history of the 1970 school year is briefly reviewed. Learning patterns in the seventh- and eighth-grade television classes are compared with those in traditional classes. An attempt to isolate the contribution of television instruction to student learning and an analysis of the effect of television instruction on certain disadvantaged groups are described. An attitude survey to determine the effect of the reform program on teachers shows a generally favorable attitude toward televised instruction. Surveys of student attitudes and of student aspirations are presented in terms of El Salvador's overall economic development. The longitudinal data obtained over the past two years, four different student surveys, and an interview study of parents are summarized. Two special projects--one to measure the changes in classroom teaching behavior and the other to obtain quick feedback on student learning in television classrooms--are reported.
