"No Fear Comes": Adolescent Girls, Ice Hockey, and the Embodiment of Gender.
Theberge, Nancy
Youth & Society, v34 n4 p497-516 Jun 2003
Examined the relationship between gender, physicality, and embodiment among Canadian adolescent girls who played ice hockey. Interview data indicated that the girls emphasized the importance of being aggressive (fearless in use of the body). Players understood that contrasts between men's hockey (more physical and aggressive) and women's hockey arise out of the advantages that boys and men enjoy and the gendered ideologies that underlie the practice of sport.
