The Course of True Love: Marriage in High School Textbooks. A Report to the Nation from the Council on Families.
Vitz, Paul C.; Mack, Dana, Ed.; Gallagher, Maggie, Ed.
This report is a summary opinion of current high school health textbooks. The report states that although high school health textbooks generally treat marriage respectfully they are intellectually weak, often poorly informed, and marred by factual errors. The 11 topics discussed include: (1)"Why Textbooks Matter"; (2) "The Good News"; (3) "Abstinence: A Prescription, Not a Choice"; (4) "The Difficulties of Single Parenting"; (5) "The Bad News"; (6) "C- for Scholarship"; (7) "Unreported News from the Social Sciences"; (8) "Children, Help Your Parents"; (9) "The Religion of Self-Esteem"; (10) "Sleeping Cupid"; and (11) "Marriage, Mucus, Monounsaturated Fat." A list of the textbooks examined and recommendations for improving high school health textbooks conclude the report. (LB)
