Empathic Childrearing and the Adult Construction of Childhood: A Psychohistorical Look.
Kennedy, David
Childhood: A Global Journal of Child Research, v5 n1 p9-22 Feb 1998
Examines the Western reconstruction of childhood in the early modern period. Maintains that this movement resulted in isolating children from adults in schools and the nuclear family. Interprets this separation as necessary hermeneutical movement in the adult-child relationship, in which the realization of psychological differences represented a dialectical prelude to rapprochement and dialog characterized as the "empathic childrearing mode."
