Parents and their roles in schools, public or private, often become the bed of heated discussions. "Parent involvement" is yesterday's buzz word; today, it is "family involvement." The phrase "parent involvement" connotes an image of parents being involved in their children's education. Family involvement is a more encompassing concept, embracing the multiple types of parent structures. Some researchers are now calling for teachers and administrators to embrace a higher level of family involvement with the more encompassing term of "family engagement." They write that "engagement" connotes a richer association between the home and the school. A qualitative research design was developed to explore a simple question: Is "family engagement" simply a new phrase or is it a synonym for "family involvement?" This study explored to what degree school leaders gained an understanding of family engagement; more importantly, to what degree did the administrators and teachers implement "family engagement" by the end of the first year?
