Up the Flagpole: A Guide for Women School Administrators.
Enwall, Beverly M.; Fabal, Carolyn O.
For women, the corporate world of education should offer a natural field for professional advancement, but frequently this is not the case. Some of the reasons behind this situation and what women can do to advance in leadership roles in education are explored in this text. Chapter 2 examines the corporate world of education and the dramatic differences between this domain and the world of business. Chapter 3 suggests that teachers look carefully at whether they want to enter administration--an area dramatically different from that of teaching. For those who decide to pursue an administrative career, chapter 4 profiles the available jobs and offers a detailed process for applying for such jobs. Once the job has been secured, chapter 5 offers an outlook of the first few days, offering tips for establishing credibility. Chapter 6 provides an overview of how men still dominate the hierarchy of education and what women can do to navigate through sexual harassment, family demands, and the stress of administrative positions. In chapter 7, tips are given as to how to establish a position on the flagpole. In chapters 8-10, advice is offered on how to maneuver for the top spots in administration, what to look out for while ascending the ladder of success, and what to do when one reaches the top. (RJM)
