Getting to Know ELLs' Families
Breiseth, Lydia
Educational Leadership, v73 n5 p46-50 Feb 2016
Most English language learners are from families that have recently immigrated to the United States-and many of those families traveled here at tremendous risk to seek better education for their children. It's important for classroom teachers to make building relationships with the families of ELLs a priority. Breiseth asserts that the most important step educators can take to forge relationships with ELL families and tap into their commitment to education is simply to get to know each family and its story. She describes seven strategies that help teachers do so: (1) communicating across language barriers; (2) being creative about meeting with families; (3) learning how and why the family came to the United States; (4) learning about the family's home situation; (5) inviting parents to share information about their child; (6) encouraging parents to share their interests and talents in the classroom; and (7) sharing successes with parents.
