Mother-Blaming in the Shadow of Incest: Commentary on "Motherhood in the Shadow of Incest" by Rachel Lev-Wiesel
Faller, Kathleen Coulborn
Journal of Child Sexual Abuse, v16 n1 p129-136 2007
This commentary on "Motherhood in the Shadow of Incest" by Rachel Lev-Wiesel, is divided into three sections. In the first section, this author addresses the issue of the role of mothers in incest. Faller contends that, with regard to research findings on the role of mothers' own sexual victimization in her child's experience, previous research fails to support Lev-Wiesel's qualitative findings. The second section raises questions about Lev-Wiesel's methodology. First, readers are not told how the "participants" were selected. Second, it does not appear that Lev-Wiesel took advantage of the opportunity to listen to a variety of voices in this study. Third, it appears that a number of the conclusions in Lev-Wiesel's analyses are not supported by the data presented. Finally, Faller questions Lev-Wiesel's failure to address the role played by the offenders--the men who sexually abused both the mothers and their children.
