Planning for Change: Fall 1984 Enrollment Update.
Coffey, Janis Cox
Data on enrollment trends and student characteristics in the Los Rios Community College District (LRCCD) are presented, along with an examination of the possible effects of the imposition of tuition in fall 1984. Following introductory comments on data collection and analysis, information is presented on district enrollment; day/evening distribution; unit load; ethnic, age, and gender distribution; and weekly student contact hours. Next, details on enrollment declines are presented in terms of age groups, gender, unit load, day/evening status, academic standing, grade point average, educational goal, high school education, student classification, retention rates, and comparisons with statewide figures. The next section focuses on disproportionate enrollment declines among black students, providing data on a survey of black non-returning students and the results of college and community meetings. Summary comments indicate that: (1) the LRCCD lost disproportionately more young black students than older ones, more black men than black women, more full-time than part-time students, more day than evening students, and considerably more continuing and returning students than new students; (2) non-returning students cited personal/family reasons and reasons related to employment as the chief factors influencing their decision not to re-enroll; and (3) the proportions of black students on academic probation and on dismissal notice were higher than for any other ethnic group and their retention rates were lower.
