Control of traffic around school areas is one of the most important factors to be considered when selecting and designing a school site plan. To provide positive safeguards, it is necessary to establish and encourage school administrators to adopt a comprehensive set of guidelines. This booklet is directed to all personnel involved either in designing and operating new school facilities or in renovating and reconstructing existing ones. Topics considered include site selection, on-site safety, off-site safety, and safety on existing school sites. Figures present the minimum turning paths for passenger cars, single trucks, and school buses that should be used when designing curves and turnarounds on internal roadways. Another set of figures depict some "before" and "after" conditions, illustrating how existing school sites may be effectively and economically modified to adapt to changes in school bus zones, parent pick-up zones, parking facilities, pedestrian and bicycle routes, and playground areas.
