Past research has demonstrated a relationship between children's physical attractiveness and their self-esteem. Other research has found that learning disabled children are at risk for having low self-esteem. This study examined the relationship between self-esteem and facial attractiveness in learning disabled children. Subjects were 20 diagnosed learning disabled children between the ages of 9 and 12 from a special school. Subjects' self-esteem was measured by administering the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. Facial attractiveness was measured by nine female judges who were unaware of the hypothesis of the study. The judges rated photographs of the children on a Facial Attractiveness Scale and the mean of the ratings for each child was used as the attractiveness rating for that child. The results indicated that there was a positive relationship between higher self-esteem and higher ratings of facial attractiveness among these learning disabled children. The results imply the importance of attractiveness in the development of self-esteem among learning disabled children. (NB)
