Tone and Style: Developing a Neglected Segment of Business Communication
Kenman, Leon F.
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n3 p305-309 2007
The importance of tone and style to communication is attested by the longevity of the popularity of "Elements of Style," published originally in 1918, with the fourth edition published in 2000 (Strunk, 1918; Strunk & White, 2000). Communicators in business and academia at all levels need to send messages that are understood pleasantly and effortlessly. Many business communication textbooks deal briefly with tone and style--for example, in discussions of the "you"-attitude and positive language--but do not provide extensive explanation and drill. In this article, the author describes Tone & Style exercises, a series of exercises which he developed for graduate nonnative speakers of English and undergraduate native speakers of English in schools of business. His students' reaction is overwhelmingly positive and is accompanied by comments to the effect that they never dealt with such crucial material under such a critical eye before. Used throughout his courses, the material is cumulative. The sooner the exercises are started, the sooner the skill taught can be used and the more points can be presented.
