Guidelines for Professional Experiences in Teacher Education.
Association of Teacher Educators, Reston, VA.
Guidelines, as developed by the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), for professional experiences in education are presented. Revisions of these guidelines were conducted by the National Field Directors Forum, a special interest group of the ATE. The major purposes of professional experiences are to: (1) provide opportunities to relate knowledge, skills, and attitudes learned in teacher education to direct experiences and to perform professional teaching duties; (2) provide opportunities to apply and test principles of learning and to apply teaching strategies; (3) provide opportunities to develop entry level competence in the full range of teaching functions; (4) provide opportunities for career exploration in the teaching profession; and (5) demonstrate principles of professional and ethical behavior. This booklet presents guidelines regarding: (1) organizational structures for professional experiences; (2) planning of professional experiences; (3) qualifications, responsibilities, and loads of college and university personnel; (4) qualifications and responsibilities of affiliated supervisory personnel; and (5) inservice education programs for supervisors.
