Encyclopaedia of Education for All. The World Conference. Volume I.
Rao, Digumarti Bhaskara
Several international agencies related to the United Nations and the World Bank convened the World Conference on Education for All in Jomtein, Thailand, March 5 through 9, 1990. The 1,500 conference participants adopted two texts, the "World Declaration on Education for All" and the "Framework for Action To Meet Basic Learning Needs." This series presents reports on several conferences and initiatives related to the implementation of these documents and efforts at putting them into effect. This volume discusses the initial conference. The first part explains the reasons for the conference and the global educational needs that concerned participants. The second, third, and fourth parts of the volume are based on the papers, statements, and audiovisual materials presented during the 48 thematic and illustrative roundtables of the conference. The central themes of the three parts are: (1) the purpose and context of education for all; (2) the expanded vision of education for all; and (3) the requirements of education for all. The final section of this volume presents the two conference documents in their entirety as a global consensus on the importance of education for all. (Contains eight figures.) (SLD)
