This syllabus, which has evolved from the New York State Experimental Biology program, includes a basic core and six optional extended areas designed to be interesting and meaningful to the types of students currently taking the Regents Examination in Biology. The seven core unit topics are: (1) The Study of Life; (2) Maintenance in Animals; (3) Maintenance in Plants; (4) Reproduction and Development; (5) Transmission of Traits from Generation to Generation; (6) Evolution and Diversity; and (7) Plants and Animals in their Environment. The six optional extended areas include: (1) Biochemistry, (2) Human Physiology, (3) Reproduction and Development, (4) Modern Genetics, (5) Modern Evolution Theory, and (6) Ecology. Appendices contain a reference bibliography, a laboratory reference list, and a list of laboratory exercises. This publication could be used in developing and teaching biology and related courses in many different settings. (MR)
