Robotics Team Lights Up New Year's Eve
LeBlanc, Cheryl
Tech Directions, v70 n6 p17-19 Jan 2011
A robotics team from Muncie, Indiana--the PhyXTGears--is made up of high school students from throughout Delaware County. The group formed as part of the FIRST Robotics program (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international program founded by inventor Dean Kamen in which students work with professional engineers and other adult mentors to learn problem-solving skills in a hands-on environment. Each year, FIRST teams design, build, and program a robot that the students then enter in a unique, competitive game. A couple of years ago, the team decided to branch out with a New Year's themed activity. This article describes how the students involved in PhyXTGears created a lighted ball that the Muncie community could use in its New Year's Eve celebration.
