The Senior Elective Program at New Jersey's Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School was designed by eighteen students and six faculty members during the summer of 1971. Initiated to update curriculum to complement an open-space building exclusively for seniors, it included revamping the school calendar from four to five marking periods. Students are encouraged to telescope their traditional required courses into the first three years of high school, leaving the senior year essentially free for taking some of the 85 elective minicourses offered, for pursuing independent study, or for gaining work experience. An open campus policy increases student options. All seniors are also assigned to small discussion groups designed to provide support and help students adjust. Teachers are encouraged to develop instructional methods conducive to open-space areas. Evaluation of the program with the Watson-Glaser Test of Critical Thinking, The Sequential Test of Educational Progress in Social Studies, the Imagine That index, and the School Sentiment Index revealed academic achievement equal to that of a control group. A statistically significant improvement in student attitudes toward the educational experience was noted.
