Microcomputer and Bibliographic Information Systems in Latin America: Problems, Experiences and Projections. Proceedings of a Meeting (Santiago, Chile, April 24-27, 1984).
Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Santiago (Chile).
In areas such as Latin America and the Caribbean, many institutions are setting up databases using existing computerized information and documentation networks, and relying on new microcomputer equipment for their implementation. Increasing awareness of the implications of this practice prompted this conference, which provided the first step of a regional effort oriented toward the following objectives: (1) identifying and examining experiences with microcomputer-based bibliographic information systems; (2) discussing basic functional microcomputer software specifications to meet the needs of users; (3) reviewing methodologies for analyzing existing commercial and non-commercial microcomputer-based bibliographic information retrieval and dissemination software; (4) examining the feasibility of creating or modifying software to make the systems of the institutions of the region more accessible, compatible, and portable; (5) analyzing problems raised by the exchange of data and software between different microcomputers, with emphasis on standards for the structure and content of data; and (6) identifying cooperative schemes for resolving problems, including suitable mechanisms for technical assistance, training, and research and development. Recommendations in the areas of software evaluation, data exchange, and the future of software packages for information handling are offered. Appendices include: a list of participants; a list of acronyms of institutions, information networks, and software packages; a conference agenda; abstracts of presentations; features of software packages examined; and copies of the documentation distributed.
