This document contains three articles devoted to assessing online learning. "Online Learning: A Digital Revolution" profiles innovative World Wide Web-based programs at high schools and colleges in the United States and worldwide and discusses the following topics: new demographic realities; the need for continuous (lifelong) learning; and strategies for reinventing education. "Determining the Efficacy of Online Learning" begins by defining learning and proceeds to explore the following topics: new learner and teacher responsibilities; assessment of student outcomes and attitudes; gaps in the research on distance and online learning efficacy; methods of assessing courses, teachers, and programs; and the relationship between online learning and business education. A table devoted to measures of quality in online learning lists a total of 24 benchmarks for use in evaluating the following aspects of online learning and instruction: institutional support; course development; teaching/learning; course structure; student support; faculty support; and evaluation and assessment. "Meeting the Challenges of Teaching Students Online" presents guidelines for creating effective course Web sites and promoting high student participation and performance levels.
