Linguistics, English, and the Language Arts.
Lefevre, Carl A.
Designed to provide elementary, secondary, and college English teachers with a basic knowledge of the history and structure of the English language, this book is composed of three sections. Part 1 provides an orientation to linguistics by analyzing the basic principles and the scope of language study, and discussing values and perspectives in the teaching of English and the language arts. Part 2 provides a synthesis of traditional, structural, transformational, and generative grammars, and analyzes the phonemic, morphemic, and syntactical structure of language, as well as suggesting methods for teaching American English linguistics. This section, the main body of the book, also contains chapters on sounds, letters, word classes, sentences, American English intonation, and literature--language and form. Part 3 contains two overviews--one surveying and evaluating the various grammars in existence today in terms of their classroom utility, and the other offering a nursery school through high school perspective on the teaching of linguistics and the English language arts. Lists of selected references and teaching suggestions are given throughout the book. (DD)
