Greek Theatre: A Reflection of Ancient Greek Society (A Program Alternative for High School Gifted Students). Programs for Gifted Students.
Girard, M. Phyllis
One in a series of instructional units designed for gifted students, the paper describes a high school curriculum that examines the Greek theatre as a reflection of Greek society. The unit is designed to provide academic substance while developing higher level critical thinking skills. Following a brief introduction on the integration of theatre and society, the course objectives (including increased cognizance of the artist's role in society and increased appreciation of different art forms) are listed, and classroom procedures are reviewed. The following four units are presented, complete with narrative information, suggested readings and suggested activities: "Introduction to the Greek Theatre,""Aeschylus's 'The Oresteia'--The Evolution of Justice,""Sophocles--the Personification of the Greek Ideal," and "Euripides--the Critic of Athens."
