Joseph Tobin made an impact on the field of comparative education in 2009 when he used a unique form of ethnography to illuminate the effects of world-wide forces, such as modernization, on schools in specific countries. Earlier, in 1989, he published "Preschool in Three Cultures" with co-authors David Wu and Dana Davidson. The innovative aspect of that book was the co-authors' development of an ethnographic method that they called video-cued multi-vocal ethnography. In 2009, Tobin joined with Yeh Hsueh and Mayumi Karasawa to publish a sequel entitled "Preschool in Three Cultures Revisited," in which he compared the findings from his previous book to show how the effects of globalization related to the logical patterns of the cultures in China, Japan, and the United States. Since this required more evidence than the ethnography afforded, Tobin added other components, such as literary theory. This article will explore some difficulties and advantages of Tobin's method for ethnographers to consider.
