Psychological Escapism: Predicting the Amount of Television Viewing by Need for Cognition.
Henning, Bernd; Vorderer, Peter
Journal of Communication, v51 n1 p100-20 Mar 2001
Investigates differences observed among German students regarding amount of television viewing. Finds a significant negative effect of need for cognition on viewing amount. Interprets this as a manifestation of individual-psychological escapism in which the lower viewers' need for cognition is, the less pleasant they feel when they have nothing to do but think, and then escape by watching TV.
