Error Pattern Relationships of Developmental Readers and Functionally Illiterate Adults.

Oral reading errors of functionally illiterate adults were compared with those of younger readers at the same achievement level. The sample consisted of 34 second- and third-grade pupils and 31 functionally illiterate adults; all subjects were reading between grade levels 2.5 and 4.0 for both word recognition and comprehension, as measured by the Standard Reading Inventory. Passages of graded difficulty were read orally by each subject to determine instructional and frustration reading levels. Errors made at both levels were analyzed using the Berends-Stuever-Ray system of error analysis. Results indicated that error patterns of the two groups of subjects were significantly similar for all categories except syllabication at the frustration level. (Author/AA)
