Training Staff To Provide Developmentally Appropriate Child Care.
Blazier, R. Elaine
The director of a proprietary child care center implemented a practicum designed to train child caregivers in child development and developmentally appropriate practices. The practicum consisted of three evening workshops and used supplementary reading materials, discussion groups, classroom observations, and individual conferences. After training, caregivers were expected to exhibit knowledge of normal child development, Piaget's philosophy, stages of cognitive development, Erikson's social development stages, and the implications of this knowledge for caregiving. Participants were expected to: (1) apply the material in their classrooms; (2) demonstrate age-appropriate caregiving practices and the ability to set up and maintain an appropriate environment for the optimal development and stimulation of children; (3) maintain a positive classroom climate and exhibit age-appropriate interaction. Practicum evaluation data indicated that the intervention was successful in increasing caregivers' knowledge and improving their classroom practices. (RH)
