Is Your Campus a Great Place to Work?
Trower, Cathy A.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v12 n4 Jul-Aug 2004
The primary goal of the Study of New Scholars is to make the academy a more equitable and appealing place for new faculty so that academic institutions can continue to attract the best and brightest scholars and teachers in all disciplines. The underlying idea of the study is to provide institutions and prospective junior faculty members with reliable, comparative information on how currently employed junior faculty evaluate these institutions as places to work. The survey used in the study measured global employee satisfaction, as well as employee satisfaction in six key areas of the workplace: tenure; the nature of work; professional development; climate, culture, and collegiality; quality of life; and equity. This report summarizes the study's findings at a dozen pilot institutions, which are now able to use survey results to provide data about the workplace to faculty candidates and fix existing workplace problems.
