Crisis Begets Change: Hurricane Recovery at Gulf Coast Institutions
Shaw, Mahauganee Dawn
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Indiana University
Despite a growing body of literature on campus crisis management and the breadth of research on organizational change, little is known about organizational changes prompted by campus crisis. The purpose of this study is to examine the changes made to the operational profiles of Gulf Coast institutions during the process of recovering from major hurricanes. Guided by punctuated equilibrium theory, a collective case study design was used to retrospectively follow two institutions' pathways through the crisis management cycle. A rich description of the crisis response and recovery experiences of two hurricane-stricken institutions is provided and analyses of individual cases focuses on: (a) the types of institutional changes made and the rationale for each, (b) the length of time each institution's equilibrium remained punctuated after the major crisis event, and (c) the difference between pre- and post-crisis equilibrium periods. Variations in institutional change are examined through a cross-case synthesis. The presentation of study findings leads to recommendations for managing campus disasters.
