This sixth annual report discusses the state of the environment and progress accomplished in meeting the goals and objectives established for an improved environment. Each of the seven chapters deals with an important environmental parameter. Chapter one is devoted to carcinogens in the environment. Chapter two presents perspectives on the environment and discusses the current problems associated with air, water, noise, solid wastes, hazardous substances, energy, coastal zones, water resources and public lands. Environmental conditions, trends and economics are explored in chapters three and four. International activities are reported in chapter five. The sixth chapter reviews the effects of the National Environmental Policy Act especially as it relates to the requirements for environmental impact statements. The final chapter describes the studies being conducted by the Council on Environmental Quality. (CS)
