School Community Education Program in New York City, 1984-85. Volume III: OEA Final Evaluation Report.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn. Office of Educational Assessment.
In 1984-85, the New York City Public Schools received $2,374,686 from the state legislature to operate the School Community Education Program (also known as the Umbrella Program). The program consisted of 46 different projects designed to provide innovative solutions to local educational and school problems. Thirteen of these projects are evaluated in this report; the projects focus on social, ethnic, or environmental studies or offer instruction in communications or the arts. Each evaluation report describes the project briefly, identifies the evaluation methodology, presents the findings, and provides recommendations for improvement. Copies of program-developed assessment instruments are provided when appropriate. The projects evaluated in this volume are: (1) Improving Attitude through the Arts (arts, grades 1-6); (2) the Media Integrated Communication Arts Program (multimedia communication arts, grade 4); (3) Project Education and Camping Opportunity through Learning Environment (E.C.O.L.E.) (environmental science training, elementary school teachers); (4) the Urban Environmental Program (environmental studies, elementary level); (5) the Across Four Bridges Project (New York harbor history, grades 3-7); (6) Wave Hill Urban Environmental Program (urban environmental science training, elementary and junior high school teachers); (7) the Refocusing Attitudinal Perspectives (RAP) Program (ethnic studies training, secondary school students and teachers); (8) the Basic Skills After-School Program (social studies enrichment, grade 6); (9) the Goddard-Riverside Environmental Education Program (environmental science, grades 4-6); (10) the Ethnic Awareness Program (ethnic studies, grades 2-9); (11) Project KEEP: the Knowledge of the Environment and Ecology Preserves Us Project (environmental studies, elementary); (12) the Lenox Hill Environmental Education Program (environmental studies, elementary); and (13) the Adventures in Science Project (marine environmental studies, elementary school students and teachers).
