To provide educators with an alternative perspective on discipline, this handbook examines the concept of discipline, presents four models of disciplinary strategy, and discusses factors related to classroom discipline. After briefly analyzing different definitions of discipline and their positive and negative outcomes, the authors discuss each of the disciplinary models in turn, including the envionmental management model, involving development of a directed learning environment; the behavioral analysis model, involving diagnosing behavior problems and using specific strategies to change the behavior; the humanistic potential model, in which others' feelings and values are stressed to encourage growth and self-development; and the social interaction model, involving helping individuals develop competencies for functioning in society. Guidelines, examples, and research conclusions are provided for each of the models. Four factors affecting the implementation of disciplinary policies are then reviewed, including educators' professional ethics, student rights, parent involvement as partners in discipline, and the relationship between administrators and counselors.
