Incorporating Disciplinary Literacy in Technology and Engineering Education
Loveland, Thomas
Technology and Engineering Teacher, v74 n3 p8-13 Nov 2014
This article presents an overview of how to relate reading to a content area, specifically technology education. The author notes that, with the new focus on Common Core English Language Arts State Standards and state-developed standards, technology and engineering teachers should include disciplinary literacy in their curriculum. Academic literacy goals for technology education students include: increasing their ability to develop knowledge from content-rich, nonfiction text; grounding their reading, writing, and oral communication on literary and informational text; and providing sustained practice with complex text. A task for technology and engineering teachers is to be able to measure and understand the textual complexity of the resources they provide for students. The result of these new goals and applications of disciplinary literacy is a deeper understanding by technology and engineering teachers on the role of text in preparing their students for college and career readiness.
