Teaching and Learning English for Business Communication: A Case in Spain
Ruiz-Garrido, Miguel F.
Business Communication Quarterly, v70 n1 p74-79 2007
Universitat Jaume I, in its unique position on the eastern shore of Spain, is preparing its business administration students for international communication by providing them with 100 classroom hours of EFL (English as a foreign language). The goal of Universitat Jaume I is to provide its students with the best possible training through ongoing course development, instructor preparation, and innovative methodologies. Businesses place importance on international communication and expect graduating students to be communicatively competent in English and another foreign language. Teachers and researchers in the university have identified a continuing language gap in the English proficiency of graduates entering the workforce and have worked hard to provide adequate competencies for the students. Because most students already enter the university with an intermediate level of EFL, the most difficult task is motivating students to apply themselves to excellence. In this article, the author talks about Universitat Jaume I and its efforts to involve students in developing a whole-language approach to teaching and learning English for business communication.
