Reinventing the Wheel: Design and Problem Solving
Blasetti, Sean M.
Technology Teacher, v69 n5 p13-17 Feb 2010
This article describes a design problem that not only takes students through the technological design process, but it also provides them with real-world problem-solving experience as it relates to the manufacturing and engineering fields. It begins with a scenario placing the student as a custom wheel designer for an automotive manufacturing company. The student is required to design a custom wheel for a customer who wants to improve the look of his or her vehicle. Throughout the project, students are maintaining a written record of their activities, requiring self-reflection. They are conducting mathematical computations and analyzing and interpreting data as well as creating drawings using geometric construction techniques. Principles of force and motion are applied to the structure of each student's design. (Contains 3 figures and 1 table.)
