Introduction to Vocations Comprehensive Middle School Program: Mathematics Activities.

Junior high or middle school student activities in mathematics are provided for three entry level occupations in each of fifteen career clusters. The fifteen cluster titles including one of the three occupations for each cluster with an example of a student activity follow: (1) Agri-business and Natural Resources (cropdusting pilot, reading an altimeter); (2) Business and Office, (bookkeeper, totalling expenses); (3) Communications and Media (advertising salesperson, figuring cost of radio commercial); (4) Construction (electrician, calculating resistance); (5) Consumer and Homemaking (dietician, computing number of calories in a meal); (6) Environment (meteorologist, chart construction); (7) Fine Arts and Humanities (photographer, determining f-stop settings); (8) Health (pharmacist, using formulas to calculate how much solution to add to prescription); (9) Hospitality and Recreation (travel counselor, calculating trip mileage); (10) Manufacturing (automotive design engineer, determining number of oil and filter changes over 60,000 miles); (11) Marine (marine biologist, computing seven day average of pH in water samples); (12) Marketing and Distribution (carpet salesperson, computing total cost of floor covering); (13) Personal Service (tax accountant, filling out tax form); (14) Public Service (bank teller, balancing cash proof sheet); and (15) Transportation (mechanic, calculating engine displacement). Mathematical skill areas necessary in each activity and activity answers are provided in each unit. (JH)
