This publication is a handbook for the do-it-yourselfer or anyone else interested in solar space and water heating. Described are methods for calculating sun angles, available energy, heating requirements, and solar heat storage. Also described are collector and system designs with mention of some design problems to avoid. Climatological data for the U.S. included in tables and charts are: (1) normal total heating degree days; (2) design outside temperature; (3) mean daily solar radiation; (4) sunshine percentage of the horizontal value; and (5) mean total hours of sunshine. This publication is ment to present all the necessary information to determine house and water heating with solar energy. From this information it should be possible to design a solar heating system for a home. (MR)
