Business Office Skills Development: Aetna Cooperative Work Experience Project. Final Report.
Meriden Public Schools, CT.
Disadvantaged minority students were provided with training in clerical skills and general business procedures and reinforcement of communication and computation skills through application in an office setting. Seniors from Meriden Public Schools were paired with minority adults who were successful role models involved on a career path at the Aetna Life and Casuality Employee Benefits Division. Cooperative work experience was provided for a half day four days per week. The Attitude toward Work Test was administered as a pre- and posttest. Positive changes in attitude were recorded on two sub-objectives; pretest scores for the remaining three sub-objectives were positive and little room for growth remained. Of 25 items, 17 manifested positive changes. Results included employment opportunities for students and improvement in school attendance. (Following the 14-page narrative are extensive appendixes, including program procedures schedule; board of education orientation packet; Aetna orientation packet containing employee policies and programs, performance evaluation form, and exercises; evaluation forms; student workshop outlines; advisory committee materials; and newspaper clippings.)
