The Role of Biology in Environmental Education

The principal mode of environmental education is to integrate environmental education into science classes. Biology is a life science. To study biology it is necessary to talk about the living environment and the relationship between biological organisms and their environment. Studying biology not only enables students to learn a great deal of environment-related basic knowledge, but also can foster a feeling toward the environment and develop skills needed to protect the environment. This article discusses the different role of biology in environmental education. Basic ecology is an important topic in elementary and middle school biology and is also needed to learn and understand basic ecology, thus this kind of information will help students understand environmental issues, develop the value system and attitude, and be pro-actively involved in environmental problem solving. Moreover, biology plays a vital role in developing student's positive feelings toward nature. Finally, it helps students develop environmental skills such as the ability to identify and define environmental problems, ability to analyze environmental problems, and the ability to solve environmental problems.
