Bill Boyd and the Australian Connection
Smart, Don
Peabody Journal of Education, v86 n4 p390-394 2011
In this article, the author shares a short account of Bill Boyd's contribution to Australian research and practice in educational administration and education policymaking. The author has sought the views and recollections of some of the colleagues who worked closely with Bill. He has chosen to quote them at length rather than attempt to summarize their statements. He thinks their own words powerfully reflect their respect for and emotional attachment to Bill. Bill Boyd was a great friend, scholar, and colleague to many people in Australia. The author argues that the single most striking feature of Bill's academic, professional, and personal connection with Australia was the impact and broad reach of that connection. Bill's special genius was not only his scholarship, his openness to new ideas, and his curiosity for pragmatic policy comparison but also his depth and breadth both of networks and of policy understandings. The author concludes with some pertinent observations from several of Bill's legion of Australian colleagues.
