Training Programs for Family Child Care Providers: An Analysis of Ten Curricula. Second Edition.
Modigliani, Kathy
This report analyzes the following 10 curricula for training programs for family child care providers: (1) Child Care, a family day home care provider program developed by Texas A&M's Agricultural Extension Service; (2) the Family Day Care Education Series, a coordinated resource manual and independent study course, the Active Learning Series, and "Raising America's Children," a television series (all developed by the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center); (3) The Creative Curriculum for Family Child Care, developed under a Head Start grant; (4) the Cornell Family Matters Project; (5) the High/Scope approach to teacher training; (6) Better Baby Care, a book and training course developed in part by the Children's Foundation; (7) Second Helping, an advanced enrichment course for family child care providers; (8) Helping Children Love Themselves and Others--a professional handbook for family day care developed by the Children's Foundation; (9) the Anti-Bias Curriculum and accompanying videotape; and (10) Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), a parent handbook and teacher's version available in English and Spanish. The 10 programs are evaluated across 12 categories, which are a combination of categories used by the National Association for Family Day Care (NAFDC) Accreditation and the Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential. These categories include health, safety, nutrition, play environment, emotional development, social development, cognitive development, physical development, creative development, working with parents, policies and procedures, and advocacy. A list of the curricula and ordering information are included. (Contains over 30 references to materials and organizations.) (MM)
