The first section introduces students to research investigations and includes: (1) "How the Investigations Are Set Up and the Rationale Behind Their Designs"; (2) "Background on the Writing Partnerships between the High School Teachers and Scientists"; (3) "Some Practical Points about Experimental Design and Open-Ended Investigations"; (4) "Safety Issues Involved in Student Research"; (5) "General Guidelines for Supervising Student Research"; (6) "Where to Find Mentors and the Role They Play in Student Research"; (7) "Where to Find Student Research Opportunities"; (8) "Modifying These Investigations for Students Who Are Exceptional"; and (9) "How the Student Research Investigations Address Assessment and Standards". The second section focuses on student research core laboratory investigations with variations and includes: (1) "A Study of Allelopathy in Plants"; (2) "Biosphere 3--It's a Small World After All"; (3) "Tolerance Testing with a Hairless "Guinea Pig"; (4) "A Community Underfoot: Density and Diversity of Invertebrates in Soil or Ground Cover"; (5) "Isolation of Nutritional Mutants of E.Coli"; (6) "Which Way to Grow: Exploring Tropic Responses of Plants"; (7) "The Impact of Mollusks on Water Quality"; (8) "Plant Tissue Culture: Embryo Isolation and Tissue Culture Initiation"; (9) "A Study of Snail Behavior"; (10) "Stressed Out Plants"; and (11) "Nature's Early Warning Systems". Appendices include: (1) "Writing Format for Student Research"; (2) "Resources on the NABT Web Site"; (3) "Standard Microbiological Practices and Aseptic Techniques"; (4) "Tips for Conducting Multiple Student Research Activities"; (5) "Competitions for Student Research Activities"; and (6) "Student Research Evaluation Form".
