Why Static Clings
Naab, Laurie; Henry, David
Science and Children, v47 n4 p32-36 Dec 2009
Using Wiggins and McTighe's (1998) concept of Big Ideas, the authors planned and designed an electricity investigation to address common student misconceptions about static electricity. With Styrofoam plates and transparent tape, elementary students investigated many properties of electrically charged and uncharged objects in a 5E learning cycle model (engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate). Students were encouraged to make predictions throughout the investigations. In doing so, they were forced to focus when making observations and were more likely to recognize and change their misconceptions. (Contains 4 figures.)
