Public Schools Energy Conservation Measures, Report Number 8: Garfield Elementary School, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
American Association of School Administrators, Arlington, VA.
Presented is an investigation of the possibilities for reducing energy consumption at Garfield Elementary School, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The report summarizes methodology and findings of the building investigations, computer simulations and assessments of energy conservation opportunities. Results indicate that approximately 62% of the present fuel and 20% of the present electricity used can be saved through minor modifications in the school's mechanical and electrical systems. The $20,000 cost of implementing these changes can be recovered in eight years. This analysis represents the first phase of a five-part Saving Schoolhouse Energy Project initiated by the American Association of School Administrators and partially funded by the Federal Energy Administration. Emphasis of the project is upon the cost effectiveness of retrofitting schools, principally with "off-the-shelf" hardware. (Author/WB)
