Bringing (Century-Old) Technology into the Classroom, Part II: Teaching Vibrations and Waves, Electricity and Magnetism, and Optics with Antiques

This is the second in a series of two articles on using antique devices to teach introductory physics. As mentioned in the first article, students can more clearly see the physics required for the operation of antique devices than for modern-day technological devices. This article further discusses antiques used to teach vibrations and waves, electricity and magnetism, and optics. In addition, a description of possible sources for obtaining antiques (e.g., antique stores, eBay, thrift stores, and garage sales) will help those interested in pursuing these ideas. Using antique devices for demonstrations in the classroom proved to be a valuable and enjoyable part of the craft of physics teaching and the devices allowed for contextual richness and visibility of the phenomena by which they operate. Students learn a lot of physics, some history, some culture, and simply have fun! [For Part I, see EJ1074860.]
